Growing up, music was always a big part of my life. While I could never play an instrument, I always appreciated the rich history of music and how anybody can intimately connect with it. Music has the unique ability to evoke several different emotions from us and even change our moods. And with so many genres and sub-genres of music, it’s hard not to get swept away in it all. Have you considered the effects workplace music may have on your business? Efficient employee scheduling is one way to boost your business, but playing music can also work for you. No matter what genre you like, music has the ability to improve employee productivity and customer morale. It may even increase the efficiency of a business.

What genre of music is best for employee productivity?

Personally, my favorite genre is Rap/Hip-Hop because of the raw energy, emotion, and feeling that it delivers. A lot of rappers have the ability to paint a vivid picture of the story they are telling and can fill the listener with a myriad of different emotions. Although Rap/Hip-Hop is my favorite genre, I listen and appreciate all forms of music. Any genre, from Rock and Roll to gospel, could potentially boost an individual’s morale and keep them in a great mood. What’s right for your business really depends on your brand and customer base. Obviously, you want to choose a genre that fits with your brand.

What are the other benefits of playing music?

Since music can so powerfully play with our emotions, it is not surprising that many grocery stores or department stores have music playing while they are open. In fact, a study was done on retail stores that played music vs. those that don’t. The results showed that customers were happier while shopping in the stores that play music, and therefore wanted to buy more products.

I find it amazing to see how music can affect people in so many ways. Depending on the situation, it can make use happy, sad, laugh and cry. I also think music can create a happy work environment as well. Playing music while working can increase focus and productivity all while comforting the employee. There’s nothing that says you can’t have fun at work, right? Most people agree that a happy, trusting work environment improves employee productivity, which ultimately increases a business’s profits. I, for one, think a person should be able to listen to music on the job. Doing so creates a happy workforce, which leads to more productivity and greater success for the business.
